Every morning, when I scroll through my Instagram feed, I know I’ll find a post from Alf Bogusky.

Every day, Alf marks the beginning and end of his day with a series of photos from the same location. In the morning, he takes photos from the front of his house, and in the evening, as the sun sets, he looks across the vista of a farmer’s field behind his suburban house.

This ritualized marking of the passing days creates a space for me to reflect on my day. So, when I began to think about people who influence my thoughts on life, Alf was one of the first people I thought of.

I know Alf as a former director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Over the years our paths have crossed through mutual friends, events, and art exhibitions. We’re more like fellow travellers on a creative pilgrimage.

In EPISODE #2 OF  “How The Light Gets In” Alf talks about how the war in Ukraine reminds him of his grandfather and fuels his trepidation about Canada/U.S. relations. Alf was the first person I interviewed for this project on Sunday, September 9, 2024. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
